Why We Love Darwin

As the capital of the Northern Territory, the coastal community of Darwin is arguably home to the friendliest and most culturally diverse people in Australia.

As the smallest, wettest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities that serves as the Top End’s regional centre, Darwin’s proximity to South East Asia makes the city’s location a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor.

However, there is a special sort of magic to Darwin that makes it unlike any other city found in the Land Down Under. While some prefer to think of it as the bridge between Asia and Australia, others regard it as the final frontier before entering the wild rivers, wetlands, cattle stations and Indigenous lands that are all integral in forming the Northern Territory’s global identity.

The Larrakia people, or the ‘Saltwater people”, are the Indigenous traditional owners of the Darwin region and have maintained close trade relationships with neighbouring communities such as the Tiwi, Wagait and Wulna peoples. Today, around two thousand Larrakia people live in the Darwin region and are recognised and celebrated for their talent in music, performance and art.

However, Larrakia country runs far beyond the municipal boundaries of Darwin, covering the area from the Cox Peninsula in the west, all the way to the Adelaide River in the east. The Larrakia people established the first trade routes in the region, trading with the Tiwi, Wagait and Wulna peoples, in addition to Indonesian fishermen who used the area as a food source.
